The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Applied Mathematics program focuses on the application of mathematical concepts to solve real-world problems. It bridges mathematics with biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, medicine, ecology, economics, finance, and many other fields that require data analysis, scientific computing, and the use of mathematical models. In a broader sense, applied mathematics is about the practice of mathematics to better understand the world around us.
BS Applied Mathematics exposes students to analytical and computational methods of solving problems in the natural sciences, health sciences, social sciences, economics, and finance, among others. It also provides them with the data analysis, modeling, optimization, and programming skills that are necessary for modern industries.
A BS Applied Mathematics graduate will thrive as an:
UP Tacloban is the only state university in Eastern Visayas that is offering a BS Applied Mathematics program at present. The program aims to address the need to improve mathematical literacy and the demand for competent mathematicians within and beyond the region. Its uniqueness also lies in its emphasis on mathematical modeling and scientific computing which are needed to develop techniques and algorithms to solve physical or applied problems. The program aims to contribute to regional, national, and global development by producing graduates who are trained in data modeling, interpretation, analysis, and forecasting, which can help shape public policy and/or government responses to socio-economic problems.
