UP Tacloban students place in the top 6 of Asia-Pacific Tech Policy Hackathon

08 October 2025

Team AiGRI of UPTC secured a spot in the top 6 of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Tech Policy Hackathon 2025, held from 30 September to 2 October at the Google Bangkok Office, The Okura Prestige, Bangkok, Thailand.

Computer Science students Angela Denise Almazan, Desirre Bless Barbosa, Norman Enrico Eulin, and Rolf Genree Garces, together with Political Science student Honey Joy Mora, developed AiGRI, an AI-powered crop insurance system that uses drone imagery and government data to assess damage and automate claims, helping farmers receive aid faster. The team was mentored by Mr. Allan Fritzgerald N. Amistoso of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

The annual APRU Tech Policy Hackathon gathers Asia-Pacific student teams to craft policy solutions. This year’s theme, “Leveraging AI and Data for Inclusive Growth,” highlighted innovations promoting digital trust, equity, and financial inclusion.
