UP Tacloban hosts quantum computing seminar and hackathon

On 18 October 2024, UP Tacloban College (UPTC), in collaboration with the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines and the Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI), hosted a seminar on quantum computing featuring talks by industry experts and attended by computer science and applied mathematics students. This was followed by the 2024 Quantum Computing Hackathon where seven teams from UP Tacloban College, Visayas State University, AMA Computer University, and Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus competed.
Dr. Donna Dodson, Cybersecurity Technologist and Advisor at evolutionQ, discussed the role of quantum computing in cybersecurity
Mr. Elmer C. Peramo of DOST-ASTI shared progress on iTANONG 2 and other AI and machine learning technologies developed by DOST-ASTI.
UP Tacloban’s Teams 1 and 2 third and first place, respectively, while VSU Team 2 won second place. The winners received cash prizes of ₱10,000.00 for the champion, ₱7,000.00 for the first runner-up, and ₱5,000.00 for the second runner-up. Each team also received a plaque, medals, certificates, and DOST-ASTI merchandise.
