24 June 2025

Fifteen undergraduate students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and their mentor, Dr. Shelley Tuazon Guyton, visited UP Tacloban College on 16-19 June 2025 for a series of lecture discussions and site visits on disaster, resilience, and post-Haiyan Tacloban City as part of their Global Experience: Manila-Tacloban course.

Faculty members from UP Tacloban’s Division of Social Sciences engaged with the group, beginning with a talk by Assoc. Prof. Ladylyn L. Mangada on “Tacloban Recovery in Housing Resettlement” on 16 June, and a forum with Asst. Prof. Leandro G. Piga on “Politics of Re-appropriation of Social Spaces in Post-Haiyan Tacloban City,” Asst. Prof. Gerwyn P. Enerlan on “Studies on the Interventions After Super Typhoon Yolanda,” and Asst. Prof. Dakila Kim P. Yee on “Political Sociology and Disaster in the Philippines: From Contention to Deliberation” on 19 June. Some students from UPTC’s undergraduate programs in Economics and Political Science also participated in a dialogue with the NUS students on disaster experiences.

On 17 June, the students from NUS went on a guided visit to no-build zones, seawalls, and resettlement villages in Tacloban City, specifically Costa Brava and Baybay in San Jose, Anibong, Pope Francis Village in Brgy 99 Diit, and NHA Housing Ridgeview.
