The BS Economics program of UP Tacloban’s Division of Social Sciences hosted a forum titled “Tempest and Turmoil: Assessing Typhoon Haiyan’s Impact on the Philippine Labor Market” with Dr. Jitae Kim, a senior researcher at Seoul National University, on 11 November 2024 at the Leyte Samar Heritage Center of UP Tacloban College.
Using a differences-in-differences model and Labor Force Survey (LFS) data from 2011 to 2016, Dr. Kim found that the average wage in Eastern Visayas rose by about 4.5% relative to non-affected regions after Typhoon Haiyan but the probability of being employed in the region decreased by 1% and average working hours dropped by 30 minutes.
