Around 300 UP Tacloban students, most from the GE courses Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas (KAS 1) and Wika, Kultura at Lipunan (WIKA 1), attended the symposium on “Archaeology in the Philippines” held on 23 April 2024 at the AS Conference Hall, UP Tacloban College.
The symposium featured Dr. Armand Salvador Mijares, Dr. Emil Charles Robles, and Dr. Juan Rofes of the UP School of Archaeology (UPSA) as speakers. Dr. Mijares is a Professor and UP Scientist and the project head of the “Going Deep in Time: The Archaeology of Callao Cave” project. He spoke about “Doing Archaeological Science and the discovery of H luzonensis.”
Dr. Robles is a Senior Lecturer at UPSA and team leader, researcher, and cartographer in several archaeological excavations in the Philippines, most recently in the survey and mapping of Cathedral Cave in Cavinti, Laguna and the rescue archaeology in Latay site, Borongan, Eastern Samar. He spoke about “Samar Archaeology and the Sohoton Cave Complex.” Dr. Rofes is head of the UPSA Zooarchaeology Laboratory and a research associate of the National Museum of the Philippines and the National Museum of Natural History-France. He spoke about “Borongan Archaeology and the 2024 UPSA Field School.”
Part of the (GE)n Z: The General Education Experience for Generation Z and Beyond Ideas Festival, the symposium was the sequel to the field trip of KAS 1 students to the UPSA field school in Latay, Brgy. Sabang North, Borongan, Eastern Samar held on 17 April 2024.
