UP Tacloban Trains Brgy. Sta. Elena Youth in Psychological First Aid for Community Support

The UP Tacloban Ugnayan ng Pahinungód, in collaboration with the Psychology faculty of UP Tacloban College, conducted a Psychological First Aid (PFA) training for the youth of Brgy. Sta. Elena, Tacloban City on 12-13 October 2024.
Division of Social Sciences Chairperson, Asst. Prof. Ruth Edisel Rylle Sadian-Cercado, encouraged the participants to apply their PFA knowledge within their communities and informed them of a potential follow-up visit after three months to assess their PFA implementation
Twenty-three young people attended the two-day training. The participants were introduced to the guiding principles of conducting Psychological First Aid (PFA), effective stress and crisis management approaches, self-care strategies, and the importance of setting proper boundaries during crisis situations. On the second day of the training, the workshop facilitators led guided simulations for the participants to practice PFA.

The PFA training is part of the Community-Based Mental Health Program of the Division of Social Sciences which aims to empower youth to provide emotional support within their communities. This initiative is also part of the UP Loves Municipality Empowerment (UP<3ME) public service program of UP Tacloban College, spearheaded by the Ugnayan ng Pahinungód.
